The two main things to decide on is the type of tow bar and the type of tow bar electrics.
Types of Towbar
There are two types of tow bar; fixed and detachable with two style versions. Flange tow bars are usually a bit cheaper to fit and suited for commercial towing whereas the swan neck tow bars are less bulky and a sleeker design.
Fixed tow bars include swan neck and flange versions, both of which stay fastened to the vehicle.
Detachable tow bars also include swan neck and detachable flange versions, which can be easily detached from the vehicle. These are usually fastened into place when in use via a key or a locking mechanism.Have a look at the different types below but remember not all types of tow bars are available for every vehicle.
The tow ball is bolted onto a faceplate and is permanently attached to your vehicle. This is ideal for serious towing, compatible with accessories and usually the cheapest option.Tow and carry bikes at the same timeAL-KO tow balls can be fittedTowing couplings and accessories can be fitted
Robust and versatile like the fixed flange, the detachable flange comes with the added benefit of being able to remove the tow bar when you are not using it.Removable and won’t trigger parking sensors when not towingTow and carry bikes at the same timeTowing couplings and accessories can be fitted
Fixed Swan Neck
With a sleeker design, the fixed swan neck is more pleasing to the eye. It is compatible with AL-KO stabilisers, however, you cannot tow and carry bikes at the same time.Less likely to set off parking sensorsSlightly more expensive than flange tow barCan’t be fitted with a bumper shield
Detachable Swan Neck
With the same visual appeal as the fixed swan neck, you are also able to remove this when you are not towing. But, you can’t tow and carry bikes at the same time.Compatible with AL-KO stabilisersLess likely to set off parking sensorsCan’t be fitted with a bumper shield
Depending on what you are towing and of course personal preference, there are three types of towing electric sockets to choose from single 7 pin electrics (12N towing electrics), twin 7 pin electrics (a combination of 12N and 12S towing electrics) and single 13 pin electrics.Once you have chosen the type of towing electric socket you then need to decide on a tow bar wiring kit. There are two types to choose from; universal wiring kits which fit all vehicles and is cheaper and dedicated wiring kits which fits specifically to a single vehicle. If you have any questions about towbars, please feel free to CONTACT US as we would be happy to help.
